Guido Tognocchi is an actor. You may have seen him in an Italian crime drama or in a TV commercial. One thing is certain: his face is more familiar to others than to himself. Yet in the small Italian village of Pietralba, nestled in the marble rock of the Apuan Alps, fame means nothing.

It all begins with a troubling letter from his brother. From that moment on, every certainty crumbles. Guido returns to the mountain village surrounded by marble quarries. There is something ancient and dark in the air—something that does not wish to be found.
