After a horrific car accident, he woke up under the operating room lights.
He couldn’t remember his name. He couldn’t remember why he was lying in the hospital. He couldn’t remember the crying faces beside his bed — even more bizarrely, some of those faces disappeared the moment he blinked, as if they had never existed at all.
He soon discovered an absurd truth: he could see the dead. Those wandering spirits lingering in the world were staring at him silently, like drowning people clinging to the last piece of driftwood.
He had wanted to ignore them. If he didn’t even care who he was, why should he care about the dead’s last wishes?
Until he felt a note in the pocket of his hospital gown, with an unfamiliar address written on it.
The gallery was small, so small that it could only hold a dozen or so paintings. But the moment he pushed open the door, something more primitive than memory hit him — all the paintings, all the colors and brushstrokes, were depicting the same figure.
He didn’t remember that person.
But his paintbrush did. His heartbeat did. The place in his chest that had been crushed in the car accident, yet still ached faintly, remembered.
From then on, he embarked on a strange path: while helping wandering spirits fulfill their final obsessions, he searched for the vanished figure in the paintings. Every time he completed a commission, a piece of dusty memory emerged; every time he drew closer to a truth, a shadow quietly retreated in the dark.
Someone had been helping him all along. When he needed clues the most, guidance always arrived unexpectedly; when he fell into danger, someone blocked the darkest blade for him. But he couldn’t catch up to that figure, couldn’t see that face clearly, and wasn’t even sure — if that person was still alive.
Or perhaps, from the very beginning, she was never alive.
Some promises are longer than death. Some forgettings are gentler than love.
