A Rhapsody in Steam is an adventure RPG.
At the far north of the continent of Tythun, the Demon King remains entrenched, while the human empire struggles to survive in the south. In this moment of crisis, you and the Hero answer the summoning and set out on what should have been a legendary expedition to defeat the Demon King—at least, that is what everyone expected.
Unfortunately, the summoning ritual proves to be deeply flawed, leaving you unable to even depart from the capital.
As a result, the expedition must continue by other means—through steam and steel. As the party’s consultant, you begin raising funds and laying tracks, pushing the railway north under the Hero’s name while dealing with the powers you encounter along the way.
The expedition is delayed again and again, yet the rails keep advancing. Isolated towns are drawn into the same line, and with that come both prosperity and conflict. Relationships shift, tensions grow, and the world begins to change in ways no one can fully predict.
And the Demon King remains in the north.
Largely forgotten.
💬 What You Do Is Up to You
In a series of events, you’ll be asked to make choices: confront imperial officials, help someone at their lowest, play the fool at a lord’s banquet, or unleash the power of the “Hero” against your enemies—there’s no single correct way to solve a problem in this world.
You can be forceful, diplomatic, or simply stay out of it. People will remember what you did—and respond in ways you might not expect.
🚂 Reshape the World with Steam & Rails
On the continent of Tythun, every settlement is an island—speaking its own language, minding its own business, and only half-believing rumors from afar.
You will plan railway routes across the map, connecting them one by one. What follows is never certain: prosperity, conflict, or something in between. Every line you draw reshapes the world in ways you may not foresee.
👥 A Loose, Ever-Changing Party
Companions will gather around the Hero—each with their own strengths, each capable of handling different problems. But this is no fixed party. They are not subordinates, just fellow travelers who happen to be on the same train. They may join you in a quiet town one morning, and leave just as quietly another night.
And the Hero always sits across from you. Your relationship will evolve over the course of the journey—from strangers bound by accident, to something deeper. The road ahead is still long.
🏙 Places Worth Returning To
There is no icon-filled map. Instead, you’ll revisit a handful of places—meeting the people there, getting involved in their troubles, leaving your mark through each encounter, and perhaps remembering a corner of it long after you’ve gone.
🎭 The Path Is Yours
You can head north and see the expedition through. Or you can stop along the way and choose a different direction. Challenge the Empire, attempt to reach an understanding with the Demon King, or drift toward a quieter life—where you begin isn’t necessarily where you’ll end up.
🎻 A Rhapsody
You might decide the fate of the world in a cramped train carriage, only to panic moments later over missing ingredients. You’ll meet nobles who speak nonsense with a straight face, officials who turn serious matters into absurdity, wanderers telling stories that lead nowhere—and travelers whose origins you’ll never quite grasp.
That’s just how this world is: it digresses, it shifts, it suddenly becomes sincere when you least expect it—then carries on, quietly amused.
