Unique units - each team's unit is a unique individual with its own personality and dialogue, while maintaining team identity
Lore flavor - each team and unit shares a history with the others, with interactions that play out both in matches and in supplemental story comics

NEW MECHANICS
Kickback - many weapons when fired will also push firing unit into the opposite direction
Modifiers - separately usable weapon/unit effects that can last anywhere from current turn, to be automatically activated when conditions are met
Traits - passive abilities and modifiers applied to team and/or individual units
XP system - units accumulate experience through damage dealt, and can level up, boosting their stats and unlocking more powerful inventory items, modifiers and traits
Leader units - teams' units that always go first, can never spawn near edges and have increased default health
Battlefield scraps - as the match goes on, various item scraps and coins can be dropped and collected (pending implementation)
Battlefield vending machines - various shop type objects that can additionally spawn in the field, allowing purchasing of health points or additional weapons (pending implementation)
Hired mercenaries - neutral units with its own inventory that can spawn in the field and be recruited by either team (pending implementation)

Additional new weapons, utilities, modifiers and traits are periodically added with each update to the game, to keep the meta ever evolving and fresh. And if some players are fond of the particular classic feel, each feature can (eventually) be individually toggled on and off.
