Castle of the Zephyr is a spiritual remake of the classic 1989 roguelike Castle of the Winds. Return to the golden age of tile-based, turn-based dungeon crawling with modern polish and thoughtful new depth.
Explore a mix of hand-crafted ruins, outdoor wilderness zones, and procedurally generated floors across many dungeons, in a living Norse-inspired world. Your journey might begin in humble cellars and bandit lairs, but you will eventually step into the cursed Castle of the Zephyr itself. Try to move quickly and confront an ancient evil before it's at full strength, or linger and grind up your own power. But beware, the final boss grows in strength as well!
Key Features
* Classless hero building. Spend ability points across STR, DEX, INT, and CON. Every stat matters for combat, carry weight, mana, and survival. Different ratios of stat-builds will lead to both pure and hybrid play-styles. Choose a starting background for a gear and stat bonus, but you're not locked in. Vary up your build as you play.
* Magic and Skills earned, not given. No free spells on level-up. Learn and master magic the old-fashioned way by reading spellbooks and skill manuals found in dungeons or bought from shops.
* Realistic inventory. The original’s legendary weight-and-bulk system returns in full. Every item has grams and cubic centimeters. Manage belts, backpacks, chests, and purses while deciding what to carry into the depths.
* Tactical combat. Melee, bows, thrown weapons, skills, and magic all feel distinct. Use weapon effects like stun, bleed, cleave, and rend armor to outplay enemies. Learn skills like Fan of Knives and Poison Caltrops, or go with magic classics like Magic Arrow and Fire Ball to blast your enemies!
* Meaningful choices. Open-world travel is available from the very start of the game. Multiple paths to the endgame, many viable character builds, and a reactive story that remembers your actions.
Faithful to the spirit of the original while adding modern QoL (mouse-driven UI, WASD controls, many thoughtful convenience features, target auto-snapping for skills and spells, zoomable viewport, controller support, searchable inventory, and full save-anywhere with optional permadeath). If you loved the original Castle of the Winds, and have been craving that type of experience with modern polish, this is the game you’ve been waiting for.
