You play as a field operative working for M.E.G. (Major Explorer Group). Your mission is to explore the Backrooms from a central base of operations. This base can be expanded and improved over time, unlocking upgrades, new systems, and purchasable equipment that enhance your survival and exploration capabilities.
You can explore the Backrooms alone or in a team of up to 4 players. Communication is supported through proximity voice chat, making coordination natural, but also risky when separated or in hostile areas.
The game is heavily inspired by established Backrooms wiki lore. Many of the entities, levels, and concepts are adapted or reinterpreted from existing documented material, maintaining consistency with the broader Backrooms universe while adding interactive gameplay systems.
New massive and highly detailed levels are planned to be added. Each one will expand the scope of exploration, introducing new environments, mechanics, and threats to survive.
The environments are hand-designed to ensure coherent and intentional level structure, but the world itself is not static. Layouts, encounters, and conditions can shift over time, making each run unpredictable even in familiar areas. Exploration is never fully safe or fully repeatable.
The game focuses on immersion through atmosphere and presentation. A realistic VHS-style camera system is included as an optional feature, enhancing tension and realism while exploring the unknown.
Liminality is an alternative mode focused entirely on exploration. It removes player stats, entities, and multiplayer interaction, offering a solitary experience where you navigate the levels without threats, objectives, or external influence, emphasizing atmosphere and environmental immersion.
